Embryo biopsy technique for pregnancy success

Assisted Fertility Services has added laser surgery to its array of reproductive laboratory techniques and is now offering embryo biopsy as an adjunct to assisted reproductive techniques for infertility.

The laser is part of the microscope used in the laboratory for routine micromanipulation techniques, where we can use special tools to manipulate eggs and embryos. The laser allows us to make a small hole in the outer covering of the embryo, called the zona pellucida.

When the hole is made, some cells from the embryo herniate out through the hole, and these can then be biopsied to determine if there are genetic or chromosomal abnormalities in the embryo.

The technique can improve the chance of a successful pregnancy and help prevent the transmission of genetic diseases to babies.

Thank you letter from an IVF patient

The letter below is from a couple who had successful IVF treatment at Community Fertility Specialists. Their positive experience underscores the personal attention and compassion that all patients receive from our infertility specialists. And the result was a little baby girl who made their family complete.

I am writing to let you know how very pleased and impressed we have been with our experience with some of the Community Health Network doctors. My husband and I have struggled with infertility for over 5 years. We went through a very difficult and unsuccessful IVF cycle in addition to three rounds of artificial insemination with a group of doctors in Louisville, KY. After adopting our precious daughter, we learned of Dr. David Carnovale of Community Health Network and Dr. Jeffrey Boldt of Assisted Fertility Services and decided to give them a call.

Our first call was to Dr. Boldt, and we immediately knew that our experience with Community Health Network was going to be drastically different than what we had gone through in Louisville. Dr. Boldt took the time to talk with us on the phone on more than one occasion and answer any questions we had. He also offered to meet with us in person to discuss our options—we took him up on his offer, at which time we met Mary Ellen Sleva, reproductive biologist. During our meeting we were treated with the utmost respect.

Our initial appointment with Dr. Carnovale was just as positive. Dr. Carnovale, his nurse Sarah Amrine, and his office manager Jodi Koesters, were pleasant, efficient and knowledgable. One of the things I appreciated the most was the fact that Dr. Carnovale took the time to review my past Louisville IVF records and discuss with me the issues he noticed. He used that data to determine how to best treat and medicate me for our upcoming IVF cycle. Because of his attention to detail, our second IVF cycle was much more pleasant and less painful than our previous cycle. I was amazed at the difference.

I cannot speak highly enough of the attentiveness of both doctors and their staffs. Every encounter we had with them, whether in person or over the phone, was a positive one. We were treated as people—not just “patients.” It was also impressive to see the positive rapport between Dr. Boldt and Dr. Carnovale, and their staffs. Together, they worked effectively as a very successful team.

When we arrived at Community Hospital for both the IVF retrieval and the IVF transfer, every person we encountered, from registration personnel to the nurse who pushed me in the wheelchair, was polite, encouraging, and positive. You don’t see that in many other hospitals and doctors’ offices, and we were very appreciative. Dr. Boldt, Dr. Carnovale, Sarah Amrine and Mary Ellen Sleva displayed wonderful bedside manner during the procedures—again, something that spoke volumes to us.

We live in southern Indiana, and we are quite eager to share our positive experiences with any of our friends who are struggling with infertility. I have also encouraged my OB/GYN (and I will continue to do so) to refer his patients to Community Fertility Specialists. I am confident that they will receive superior treatment.

We are incredibly blessed—in addition to our older daughter, we now have another beautiful baby girl, thanks to your team at Community Health Network. Please know, however, that I would have written this exact letter to you even if the IVF procedure had not been successful, because our experience was so positive.

Please keep up the good work! Patients such as ourselves notice and appreciate every detail. You have incredible assets in Dr. Boldt, Dr. Carnovale, and their offices.

Study: Ovarian cell stimulation to produce eggs in infertile women

Regenerative-medicine researchers have moved a promising step closer to helping infertile, premenopausal women produce enough eggs to become pregnant.

Surgeons at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s Institute for Regenerative Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC, reported that they were able to stimulate ovarian cell production using an in vitro rat model, and observed as the cells matured into very early-stage eggs that could possibly be fertilized.

“While conventional hormone replacement therapy is able to maintain female sexual characteristics, it’s unable to restore ovarian tissue function, which includes the production of eggs,” the study’s authors reported. Ovarian tissue function is critical for premenopausal women who desire to conceive.

Making dreams come true

A patient letter from the Moore family, after baby Eliza’s first birthday.

Dr. Carnovale and staff,

Eliza in April 2012, 11 months old

Eliza in April 2012, 11 months

This month, my miracle baby celebrated her first birthday. I thought of you that day, as I have often thought of you during the past two years. I want you to know what a difference you have made to our lives. Eliza is an amazing girl! She’s happy and smiley and loving and clever and more amazing than I could have ever imagined.

My husband and I have had the happiest year of our lives, and that is largely due to you. You have changed our lives and blessed us beyond our dreams. Words could never thank you enough for your patience, skill and kindness. You brought this miracle to us, with God’s guidance, and we thank you for that. Both you and your staff were incredible and I pray for your continued success in making dreams come true.
